TLDR Hair loss can happen after both mild and severe COVID-19, and areas with more COVID-19 cases may see more hair loss cases.
The observational study conducted by the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital involved 10 patients who reported symptoms of Telogen Effluvium (TE), a type of hair loss, following COVID-19 symptoms. The study found that 9 out of 10 patients had mild COVID-19 symptoms with an average onset of hair shedding 73 days after infection. None of these patients had a previous history of hair loss. In comparison, a literature review identified 28 patients, 50% of whom were hospitalized for severe COVID-19 infection with an average onset of TE 87 days after infection, and 12% had pre-existing androgenic alopecia. The study concluded that TE can occur following both mild and severe COVID-19 infection, and dermatologists should expect an increase in TE in areas heavily affected by COVID-19.
