TLDR Men with systemic lupus erythematosus often have more severe symptoms but can respond well to treatment.
Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disease more common in women, but men often experience a more aggressive form. A 29-year-old man presented with joint pain, red spots, hair loss, swollen legs, mouth ulcers, and fatigue. Physical examination revealed malar and discoid rashes, and lab tests confirmed SLE with positive ANA profile for RNP/Sm, Sm, dsDNA, and histone. A skin biopsy confirmed discoid lupus. The patient was treated with pulse-dose methylprednisolone for 3 days and responded well clinically.
