TLDR Most patients with Cutaneous Lupus Erythematosus are young females, and dermatologists play a key role in diagnosis.
This study describes the clinico-pathological profile of 218 patients with Cutaneous Lupus Erythematosus (CLE) from Chittagong Medical College Hospital. The majority were females (86%) with a mean age of 28 years. Chronic Cutaneous Lupus Erythematosus (CCLE) was the most common subtype (71%), followed by Acute (21%) and Subacute (8%) forms. Photosensitivity (91%) and discoid rash (71%) were the most frequent skin manifestations. Nonscarring alopecia was the most common nonspecific lesion (56%). Antinuclear Antibody (ANA) was the most prevalent autoantibody (61%). Hematological abnormalities were common, with erythrocyte sedimentation rate being the most frequent (73.85%). The study highlights the importance of dermatologists in diagnosing and classifying CLE due to its varied clinical presentations and the potential overlap with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE).
