TLDR Finasteride reduces hair loss by blocking testosterone's effects on scalp cells.
The study explored the role of testosterone (T) and finasteride in androgenetic alopecia (AGA), focusing on the expression of type I procollagen and transforming growth factor-beta 1 (TGF-beta1) in human scalp dermal fibroblasts. Testosterone treatment increased type I procollagen and TGF-beta1 expression, contributing to perifollicular fibrosis in AGA. Finasteride pretreatment inhibited these effects, reducing type I procollagen expression by 40.2% at the mRNA level and 24.9% at the protein level, and decreasing TGF-beta1 protein expression by 30.4%. The study suggested that finasteride's inhibitory effects on T-induced procollagen and TGF-beta1 expression might explain its mechanism in treating AGA.
