TLDR Mohs micrographic surgery is more effective than surgical excision for treating pilomatrix carcinoma, with no recurrences.
This systematic review investigated surgical treatments for pilomatrix carcinoma (PMC), a rare malignant tumor of the hair follicle. The study analyzed 50 articles, including 101 cases, to compare outcomes of Mohs micrographic surgery (MMS) and surgical excision. MMS was performed in 17 cases with no recurrences, while surgical excision was used in 84 cases with a 34.5% recurrence rate. The mean follow-up times were similar for both methods, around 7.5 months. The findings suggest that MMS offers superior outcomes with no recurrences, highlighting its importance in achieving negative margins and preventing recurrence and metastasis in PMC treatment.
