TLDR The KAP8-1 gene affects skin, hair follicle development, and wool quality in different sheep varieties.
The study investigated the relative expression of the keratin associated protein 8-1 (KAP8-1) gene in different varieties of Ovis aries to understand its role in skin and hair follicle development and wool quality. Using Real-time PCR SYBR GreenⅠ, the expression of the KAP8-1 gene was measured in three crossbred sheep varieties: South African mutton Merino sheep × Northeast Fine wool sheep, South African mutton Merino sheep × Small-tailed Han sheep, and Dorper sheep × Small-tailed Han sheep. The relative expression ratios were 7.56:2.19:1, indicating that the KAP8-1 gene influenced skin and hair follicle development and contributed to wool quality differences among the varieties.
