Clinical and Trichoscopic Study of Tinea Capitis Versus Alopecia Areata in Pediatric Patients

    Mahmoud Mohammed, Maab Ibrahim
TLDR Dermoscopy can quickly and reliably distinguish Tinea Capitis from Alopecia Areata by identifying specific hair patterns.
The study compared trichoscopic features of Tinea Capitis (TC) and Alopecia Areata (AA) in 60 pediatric patients, with 30 patients in each group, from Tanta University Hospitals. It found that specific hair patterns, such as comma-shaped, zigzag-shaped, and corkscrew hairs, were unique to TC, while yellow dots, exclamation mark hairs, and short vellus hairs were unique to AA. The study concluded that dermoscopy was a rapid and reliable method for differentiating between TC and AA by identifying these characteristic features.
