TLDR Pregnant women often have skin changes, but only a small percentage have skin conditions caused by or specific to pregnancy; doctors need to tell them apart for proper treatment.
In the 2017 study "Clinical study of dermatoses of pregnancy" by Vinita Gupta and Poonam Taneja, 341 pregnant women were examined over a year at the SGT Medical College and Hospital. The study found that all the pregnant women experienced physiological skin changes due to pregnancy, but only 12.3% reported dermatoses affected by pregnancy, and 7.9% had dermatoses specific to pregnancy. The highest incidence, 78%, was found in the age group between 15-25 years. The study concluded that it's crucial for clinicians to differentiate between physiological changes of pregnancy and other dermatoses that can occur during pregnancy for timely management and to reduce maternal and fetal morbidity.
