TLDR Understanding skin structure and function is key to managing skin diseases and improving quality of life.
The document described the structure and function of the skin, hair, and nails. The skin consisted of two main layers: the epidermis and the dermis. Keratinocytes were produced in the deepest layer of the epidermis and underwent terminal differentiation to form the surface layer of dead cells. The basal layer, prickle cell/spinous layer, and granular layer were key components of the epidermis. Hair growth occurred from follicles, which were tubular invaginations of the epidermis, and together with sebaceous glands, formed the pilosebaceous unit. Nail growth was continuous throughout life, with a faster rate in youth compared to old age.
