Structural Investigation on Damaged Hair Keratin Treated with α,β-Unsaturated Michael Acceptors Used as Repairing Agents

Michele Di Foggia, Carla Boga, Gabriele Micheletti, Benedetta Nocentini, Paola Taddei
TLDR Treatments improved hair surface and scale structure but didn't increase certain bonds in the hair cortex.
The study investigated the structural changes in keratin from bleached hair treated with commercial reconstructive agents, shikimic acid, and dimethyl maleate using vibrational spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Results showed that these agents interacted with both the cortex and cuticle regions of hair fibers, with more significant modifications observed in hair bleached three times compared to four times. Commercial agents were more effective than the model compounds in modifying hair fibers at the molecular level.

Keratin microspheres may offer additional mechanisms to combat hair loss compared to minoxidil. The process to create these microspheres is relatively simple and can be done at home with basic equipment.

OP is considering using a keratin gel to improve hair quality and is concerned about its safety and visual impact on a slightly balding crown. Users discuss shampoo frequency, with some suggesting less frequent use for better hair health, but OP prefers regular shampoo and conditioner for silky hair.
