TLDR Using hair grafts from outside the safe zone requires careful placement to improve their survival and effectiveness.
The research article discusses the common practice in hair restoration of harvesting grafts outside the traditional safe donor zone due to the need to avoid overharvesting, homogenize the donor's appearance, and maximize lifetime donor grafts with follicular unit excision (FUE). However, these grafts are more likely to be sensitive to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) and may not survive as long as those from inside the safe zone when transplanted. The author proposes strategies to intentionally place these grafts in a way that optimizes their use and minimizes potential problems.

A man lost his transplanted hair despite using minoxidil because he wasn't on a DHT blocker like finasteride, which is essential to prevent further hair loss. The conversation emphasizes that hair transplants are not a cure and require maintenance with medications to preserve results.
