TLDR Steroid use can cause a rare eye condition called central serous retinopathy, which can lead to permanent vision damage.
In 2016, a case report highlighted the development of central serous retinopathy, a lesser-known complication occurring in less than 10% of cases with steroid use. This specific case involved a patient who was prescribed a low dose of prednisolone (20 mg per day) for androgenic alopecia during post-surgical follicular unit extraction (FUE) surgery follow-up. The patient's central serous retinopathy recovered spontaneously after the gradual withdrawal of steroids. The authors emphasized the need for awareness of this potential complication due to its risk of causing irreversible visual impairment.
