TLDR Cyclosporine combination therapy can regrow hair in severe alopecia areata but needs careful monitoring for side effects.
The study evaluated the effectiveness of oral cyclosporine combined with other treatments in 28 patients with severe or refractory alopecia areata. Results showed that 71% of patients experienced new hair growth within an average of 2.5 months. However, 47% of patients experienced side effects, including hypertrichosis and gastrointestinal disturbances, leading to therapy discontinuation in 3 cases. Despite these side effects, which were mostly mild and transient, cyclosporine combination therapy was recommended for severe cases, with careful monitoring to prevent severe side effects.
