TLDR Staphylococcus simulans may cause dermatitis in African pygmy hedgehogs.
This report described a case of dermatitis in a captive African pygmy hedgehog, characterized by hyperkeratosis and alopecia, which was linked to the bacterium Staphylococcus simulans. Microscopic examination of the lesion's exudates revealed numerous gram-positive cocci, and aerobic bacterial culture confirmed the overgrowth of S. simulans. Identification was achieved through polymerase chain reaction and sequencing of the 16S ribosomal RNA gene. This was the first report suggesting a connection between S. simulans and dermatitis in hedgehogs.
