TLDR The research confirmed that certain methods are reliable for standardizing Eclipta alba and ensuring its safety and quality in herbal products.
The study from 2017 aimed to standardize Eclipta alba, a plant with medicinal properties including hair growth promotion, by quantifying its active biomarker ß-sitosterol using HPTLC, HPLC, and AAS. The researchers determined that petroleum ether was a more effective solvent than methanol for extracting ß-sitosterol, with a higher content found in the petroleum ether extract (4.65% w/w by HPTLC and 4.67% w/w by HPLC). Additionally, AAS analysis confirmed that the levels of potentially toxic metals in the plant were within safe limits. The study concluded that HPTLC and HPLC are reliable methods for standardizing Eclipta alba and its formulations, and AAS is suitable for assessing toxic metal content, ensuring the efficacy, quality, and safety of herbal products containing the plant.
