TLDR A new method using NBD-CL can accurately and precisely measure finasteride in medicine, and could be used regularly for quality control in the industry.
In 2016, researchers developed a simple, sensitive, and validated spectrophotometric method for determining finasteride using 2-Chloro-7-nitrobenzo-2-oxa-1, 3-diazol (NBD-CL). The method involved the reaction of finasteride and NBD-CL in an alkaline medium to develop a deep brown adduct. The method obeyed Beer's law in the concentration range of 25-75 µg/mL of finasteride. The limit of detection and limit of quantification were 0.17 µg/mL and 0.52 µg/mL respectively. The method was successfully applied to the determination of finasteride in pharmaceutical formulation and was found to be as precise and accurate as the standard method. The study concluded that this method could be used as a routine method for the determination of finasteride in quality control and industry.
