The study assessed the ability of specialists to define and diagnose dermatologic diseases by reviewing 381 hospitalized patients referred to a Dermatology Clinic. Only 31.2% of clinicians made a dermatologic definition, and 35.1% made a pre-diagnosis, with 66.2% of these being correct. Internists were more likely than surgeons to write a definitive dermatologic examination note, but there was no significant difference in the accuracy of diagnoses between the two groups. The study concluded that dermatologic consultations were essential for improving patient care, as specialists often lacked the skills to accurately recognize and define dermatologic conditions.
