Identifying Gaps and Training Needs in Postgraduate Training in Dermatology Sub-Specialties: An Online Survey Among Residents
December 2024
TLDR Dermatology residents in India need better training in several sub-specialties to boost confidence and skills.
A nationwide survey of 216 dermatology residents in India revealed significant gaps in postgraduate training across various dermatology sub-specialties. While over 50% of residents felt their training was adequate in pigmentary disorders, trichology, and dermatosurgery, less than half reported adequate training in dermatopathology, dermatoscopy, and onychology. Confidence in clinical practice was similarly low, with fewer than 30% feeling confident in aesthetic practice. The study highlights the need for enhanced and focused training in areas such as trichology, onychology, dermatoscopy, pediatric dermatology, dermatosurgery, LASERs, and dermatopathology to improve resident confidence and competence.
