Effect of Sodium Lauryl Sulfate Concentration Variation as Surfactant in Ethanol Extract Shampoo of Randu Leaves (Ceiba Pentandra Gaertn) on the Resulting Physical Properties
January 2013
TLDR The shampoo with 10% SLS had the best physical properties.
The study investigated the effect of varying concentrations of sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) on the physical properties of a shampoo made from ethanol extract of Ceiba pentandra Gaertn. leaves, which contain hair growth-promoting compounds like flavonoids, phenols, and saponins. Four shampoo formulations with SLS concentrations of 0%, 5%, 10%, and 15% were tested for organoleptic properties, pH, viscosity, foam stability, specific gravity, and surface tension. The formulation with 10% SLS (FII) exhibited the best physical properties, meeting Indonesian National Standards with a viscosity of 450 cP, pH of 8.05, foam stability of 86.048%, specific gravity of 1.121 g/cm³, and surface tension of 68.133 dyne/cm. Statistical analysis confirmed that SLS concentration significantly affected the shampoo's physical properties.
