TLDR The spiny mouse can fully regenerate skin after burns, unlike the lab mouse.
The study demonstrated that the spiny mouse, Acomys cahirinus, exhibited remarkable regenerative abilities after full thickness thermal burn injuries, unlike the lab mouse, Mus musculus, which developed thick, hairless scars. In Acomys, the skin regenerated completely, including skeletal muscle, dermis, hair follicles, and sebaceous glands, making the skin appear indistinguishable from its original state. This regeneration was attributed to faster re-epithelialization and differences in macrophage profiles, which likely influenced cytokine responses. The study involved groups of 3 spiny mice and compared their healing process to that of the lab mice, highlighting the potential for understanding skin regeneration mechanisms.
