TLDR Premature ovarian insufficiency (POI) can harm women's sexual health, and they may benefit from hormone therapy and counseling.
The document reviewed the effects of premature ovarian insufficiency (POI) on women's sexuality, noting that POI affects 1% of women under 40 and can lead to symptoms that negatively impact sexual function. It emphasized the importance of a comprehensive biopsychosocial approach to management, including hormone therapy and psychosexual counseling. An observational study involving 25 women with spontaneous POI, 17 with surgically induced menopause, 12 with chemically induced menopause, and 23 controls indicated compromised mental health in women with POI. A pilot trial with 37 women suggested that psychoeducational interventions could improve sexual function and psychological distress. The document concluded that while hormone therapy is essential, further research and psychosexual counseling are needed to address the sexual symptoms and overall burden of POI.
