TLDR Many patients with hair loss had low iron and vitamin D levels, but thyroid issues were not common.
In the retrospective study involving 276 female patients with telogen effluvium at Qassim University's dermatology clinics, it was found that 35.4% had ferritin deficiency, 34.2% had vitamin D deficiency, and 8.5% had abnormal TSH levels. The study recommends including serum ferritin and vitamin D in the screening panel for TE patients, while suggesting that TSH screening should be tailored to the individual's clinical presentation rather than being routine for all TE patients, as the prevalence of hypothyroidism was similar to that of the general population. The study's limitations include its retrospective design, being single-center, and the absence of a control group.
