TLDR People with chronic hair loss often have lower Vitamin B12 levels.
The case-control study conducted at a tertiary care hospital over a year from January 2020 to January 2021 aimed to estimate the levels of serum cobalamin (Vitamin B12) in patients with chronic telogen effluvium, a type of hair loss. The study included 35 patients with telogen effluvium, aged between 18 and 60 years, and 35 healthy volunteers as controls. The results showed that 60% of the subjects with telogen effluvium had Vitamin B12 deficiency (<250 pg/ml), compared to 26% of the controls (P = 0.004). The study concluded that Vitamin B12 deficiency was more common in cases of chronic telogen effluvium, suggesting that a deficiency of such micronutrients may represent modifiable risk factors for telogen effluvium management.
