Serum Prolactin and Dehydroepiandrosterone Concentrations During the Summer and Winter Hair Growth Cycles of Mink (Mustela Vison)

Jack Rose, Michael Kennedy, Brad Johnston, W. G. Foster
TLDR Changes in prolactin and DHEA levels are not required for the start of mink hair growth cycles.
The study investigated the role of serum prolactin (PRL) and dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) in the hair growth cycles of mink. It was found that increasing PRL levels in spring initiated summer anagen, while decreasing PRL levels in fall induced winter anagen. Treatment with haloperidol (HAL) advanced summer anagen onset, while melatonin (MEL) inhibited it. The study suggested that PRL might influence hair growth through the adrenal glands and skin, with DHEA serving as a substrate for local steroid formation. The findings highlighted the potential intracrine regulation of hair growth cycles in mink.

community Please take a vitamin & hormone test

in Chat  260 upvotes 1 year ago
Checking vitamin and hormone levels is important for addressing hair loss, as deficiencies in vitamin D, zinc, and iron can affect hair growth. Treatments like finasteride, minoxidil, and vitamin supplements are used, but addressing deficiencies is crucial for effectiveness.

community 26M Baseline blood work done before Finasteride

      in Finasteride/Dutasteride  8 upvotes 4 years ago
A person considering finasteride for hair loss checked their hormone levels before starting treatment. They are concerned about the potential increase in estradiol and its effects, as well as the impact on their sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) and free testosterone levels.

community What are your thoughts on pre-finasteride blood work?

      in Finasteride/Dutasteride  1 upvotes 2 years ago
The user is considering resuming finasteride after a 6-month break and is debating the necessity of extensive blood work, including hormone and health markers, to establish a baseline. They are unsure if the tests are necessary since they experienced no side effects previously.

community Why use Finasteride instead of Dutasteride?

      in Finasteride/Dutasteride  39 upvotes 2 years ago
People are discussing why some choose finasteride over dutasteride for hair loss, noting that while dutasteride is more effective, it's also more expensive, less researched, and potentially has more side effects. Some users shared personal experiences with side effects from both drugs, and others mentioned that finasteride is FDA approved for hair loss, while dutasteride is not, except in Japan.

High DHEA levels may contribute to hair loss by increasing DHT in hair follicles, potentially explaining why finasteride is ineffective for some. Treatments like high-dose dutasteride and RU58841 are suggested, but the underlying cause, such as adrenal issues, should be investigated.

community My Estradiol Level on Finasteride

      in Research/Science  19 upvotes 9 months ago
Finasteride has no effect on the user's estradiol levels, and body fat may influence aromatization. The user is on testosterone replacement therapy and uses everyday injections to manage high RBC count, with plans to measure DHT, DHEA-S, and pregnenolone levels.
