TLDR Women with PCOS have higher levels of AMH in their blood and follicles, and this can help predict their risk of overreaction to fertility treatments.
The study investigated the levels of serum and intrafollicular Anti-Müllerian Hormone (AMH) in women with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) undergoing In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) compared to normovulatory women. It included 110 women, with 55 in the PCOS group and 55 in the normovulatory group. The findings revealed that both serum and intrafollicular AMH levels were significantly higher in the PCOS group, with a mean serum AMH level of 9.4±3.3 ng/mL in PCOS patients versus 3.25±2.62 ng/mL in the control group. The study concluded that serum AMH is a reliable marker for predicting the risk of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) and should be assessed before starting controlled ovarian stimulation for IVF, particularly in PCOS patients. It also suggested that PCOS patients with serum AMH levels above 11 ng/mL should begin with a very low dose of gonadotropins to prevent OHSS.
