TLDR COVID-19 may cause hair loss, especially in young adults.
This study investigated self-reported hair loss following COVID-19 infection in 480 Iraqi individuals aged 19 and above. It found that 74.5% of participants reported hair loss, typically beginning 1-2 months after infection. Hair loss duration varied, with some experiencing it for over 6 months. A significant majority (79.5%) sought medical attention. Hair loss was more prevalent in those with a history of COVID-19 (83.5%) compared to those who tested negative (38.0%). Age, but not sex, was significantly associated with hair loss, with the highest prevalence in the 19-29 age group. The findings suggest a potential link between COVID-19 and hair loss, resembling telogen effluvium, and highlight the need for further research into biological mechanisms and treatments.
