Self-Medication Pattern for Dandruff Treatment Among Pharmacy Students

    Aleena Roy
TLDR Many pharmacy students self-medicate for dandruff, which is concerning and highlights the need for better education on treatment.
The study, conducted at Ezhuthachan College of Pharmaceutical Sciences, surveyed pharmacy students using a 15-item web-based questionnaire to assess the prevalence of self-medication for dandruff treatment. The results showed that 76% of the respondents suffered from dandruff, with 67% experiencing hair loss, 53% acne, 31% itching, and 11% skin rashes as a result of the condition. Notably, 41% of the students engaged in self-medication, with 45% using ketoconazole shampoo, which was associated with hair loss in many cases. The study concluded that self-medication for dandruff among the students was worryingly high and emphasized the need for proper education on the diagnosis and treatment of dandruff to prevent future complications.
