TLDR Taking too many selenium supplements can cause serious health problems like hair loss and fatigue.
A 36-year-old man experienced selenium poisoning after consuming excessive selenium-containing vitamin tablets as part of a holistic therapy for fatigue. He was instructed to take two tablets every hour until experiencing loose stools, then 10 tablets daily. Within the first week, he developed diarrhea, worsening fatigue, hair loss, and tingling sensations. Despite these symptoms, he continued the regimen for another week, resulting in complete baldness and nail color changes. After discontinuing the vitamins, he began to recover, with early hair regrowth observed two weeks later.
