TLDR Most dermatologists in Western Rajasthan prefer the anti-depressant Doxepin for elderly skin conditions and often refer patients to a psychiatrist.
The study surveyed 93 dermatologists in Western Rajasthan, India, to understand their preferences in selecting anti-depressants for treating skin conditions in individuals aged 60 and above. It was found that 25-50% of these patients had psycho-cutaneous disturbances, primarily due to dermatophyte infections, lichen simplex chronic, and Prurigo, with neurotic excoriation being the most common disorder. The anti-depressant Doxepin was preferred by 51.9% of dermatologists, and 86.4% preferred to refer the patient to a psychiatrist at the initial visit. The study concluded that understanding these preferences can help offer more economical treatment options and improve existing guidelines. However, the study was limited by its small sample size and regional focus.
