TLDR In Poland, people search more for certain skin conditions depending on the season, and despite more STD infections, searches for them have decreased, suggesting a need for better sexual education.
The study "Seasonal Patterns and Trends in Dermatoses in Poland" analyzed Google search data from 2010 to 2020, identifying seasonal trends in dermatology-related searches. Certain topics were searched more frequently in winter (e.g., herpes, scabies, candida) and others in summer (e.g., erythema, warts, urticaria). A decrease in searches for sexually transmitted diseases was noted, despite an increase in reported infection rates, indicating a need for improved sexual education in Poland. The study found no significant differences in trends for coronavirus-related skin symptoms during 2020. Dermatoses like atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis, and skin cancers were influenced by UV radiation levels, with more searches during winter months. Searches for UV-exposure-related conditions were higher during summer months. Fungal infections were more common in warmer months, while STDs had more searches during winter months. The study suggests that analyzing internet search trends can enhance understanding of patients' needs and guide further research.
