TLDR The scraggly mutation causes hair loss and skin defects in mice.
The study identified a new mouse mutation called scraggly (sgl) induced by chlorambucil, which caused hair loss, skin defects, and abnormalities in sebaceous lipid composition in homozygous mutant mice. Researchers created a high-resolution genetic map of mouse Chromosome 19, linking the sgl mutation to the DNA marker D19Umi1. Further mapping using a cross between BALB/c and CAST/Ei mice helped locate markers around the mutation and potential candidate genes, Fgf8 and Cyp17. Allelism tests confirmed that sgl and another hair loss mutation, asebia (ab), were distinct genes.
