TLDR Hair transplant is effective for treating hair loss caused by radiation and improves patients' quality of life.
Between December 1984 and January 2002, 42 patients with post-irradiation alopecia underwent autogenic hair follicle transplantation at the Hair Clinic Poznań. The patients, comprising 33 women and 9 men with a mean age of 26.5 years, received 1 to 4 surgical sessions, averaging 2.2 sessions each. Micro- and mini-grafts containing 1-4 hairs were used in the procedure. The treatment resulted in very good hair regrowth within 4-5 months without inflammatory complications, and the cosmetic outcomes were rated as good or very good. This significantly improved the psychological well-being of the patients. The study concluded that autogenic hair follicle transplantation is an effective method for treating post-irradiation alopecia and enhancing patients' quality of life.
