TLDR Topical minoxidil often causes side effects like scalp irritation, but most users continue treatment.
This observational study assessed the safety profile of topical minoxidil in 105 users, primarily women, with an average age of 36.5 years, using a 2% solution for hair loss conditions like androgenetic alopecia and telogen effluvium. The study found that 72% of participants experienced at least one adverse effect, with scalp irritation (36.2%), facial hypertrichosis (21.9%), and dandruff (18%) being the most common. Systemic side effects were less frequent. Despite the high incidence of side effects, only 20% of users discontinued treatment, and prolonged use was linked to better adherence, indicating improved tolerance over time. The study highlights the need for monitoring side effects and considering alternative treatments for those with sensitivities.
