TLDR Rosemary essential oil improved hair growth and thickness in UVB-exposed mice.
The study investigated the effects of Rosmarinus officinalis essential oil (ROEO) on hair growth and follicle diameter in UVB-exposed mice, with a focus on the role of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). Thirty male Swiss mice were divided into groups and treated with either paraffin oil, 2% minoxidil, or varying concentrations of ROEO daily for 21 days, while also being exposed to UVB radiation three times per week. The results showed that mice treated with 10% ROEO had significantly increased hair length, follicle diameter, and VEGF levels compared to those only exposed to UVB. The ROEO was found to contain antioxidants such as phenolic compounds, flavonoids, tannins, 1.8-cineole, α-pinene, and camphor. The study concluded that 10% ROEO could enhance hair growth and follicle size in UVB-exposed mice, likely due to its antioxidant properties.
