TLDR Non-drug treatments like saw palmetto, horsetail, pumpkin seed oil, curcumin, and addressing nutritional deficiencies may help female hair loss.
Female hair loss, affecting over 50% of postmenopausal women, is primarily due to androgenetic alopecia but can also result from other conditions like alopecia areata and telogen effluvium. The psychological impact is significant, yet FDA-approved treatments are limited. This review highlights non-pharmaceutical interventions, such as saw palmetto, horsetail, and pumpkin seed oil, which inhibit 5α-reductase and may promote hair density. Curcumin's anti-inflammatory properties and addressing nutritional deficiencies, particularly in iron and vitamin D, are also emphasized. The importance of a balanced diet and cautious supplementation is noted, with further studies needed to confirm the efficacy and safety of these natural treatments.
