TLDR Favus, a rare fungal infection, has reappeared in Japan.
Favus, a dermatophytosis characterized by yellow scutula around hair follicles, had been rare in Japan for the past four decades, with no clinical isolation of Trichophyton schoenleinii. This report detailed a case involving a 63-year-old Japanese woman with favus of vellus hair. Although fungal culture was negative, fungal elements were detected in crust and hair bulbs via Grocott staining. T. schoenleinii was identified through PCR-based DNA sequencing of the rRNA gene from a formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue sample. The patient was successfully treated with oral terbinafine and topical luliconazole cream.
