TLDR Hair loss significantly affects quality of life, wet combing is better than visual inspection for finding head lice, many with oral lichen planus have allergies, and wet wraps with steroids quickly improve itchy skin conditions.
In a study examining the impact of alopecia on quality of life, 214 individuals with hair loss, including 171 women and 43 men, completed a survey. The study found that alopecia significantly affected patients' lives, with women reporting a greater impact on leisure and personal relationships, while men reported more interference with work. The key factor influencing quality of life was the patients' perception of their disease. Another study compared the accuracy of visual inspection versus wet combing for diagnosing head lice in 304 students aged 6 to 12 years, revealing that wet combing had a sensitivity of 91% compared to only 29% for visual inspection. A retrospective study of 24 patients with oral lichen planus who underwent patch testing found that about two-thirds had identifiable allergies, with some reporting improvement in their condition after avoiding specific allergens. Lastly, a retrospective study at the Mayo Clinic on the use of wet dressings combined with topical steroids for itchy skin conditions showed that 94% of 331 hospitalized patients experienced improvement after one day of treatment, with 98% improvement at discharge. Wet wraps were found to be effective for a wide range of itchy skin conditions and can be adapted for home use.
