Refractory Dermatomyositis–Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Overlap Syndrome and Response to Tofacitinib

    Preston Williams, Benjamin McKinney
TLDR Tofacitinib successfully treated a woman's severe symptoms from a rare autoimmune condition.
A 39-year-old woman with a dermatomyositis–systemic lupus erythematosus overlap syndrome experienced severe symptoms including muscle weakness, rash, and hair loss, which were refractory to initial treatments. After a 2.5-month hospitalization and various treatments, her symptoms significantly improved with the administration of tofacitinib, a janus kinase inhibitor. This case highlighted the diagnostic challenges of overlap syndromes and demonstrated the efficacy of tofacitinib in reducing symptoms and steroid dependency in such conditions.
