TLDR Red rice is a nutritious super-food with potential health benefits.
The study on red rice highlights its potential as a super-food and pharmaceutical resource due to its rich nutritional and bioactive properties. Red rice is abundant in carbohydrates (87.2 g/100 g dw) and proteins (9.1 g/100 g dw), with notable amounts of essential fatty acids and phenolic compounds, such as flavan-3-ols, contributing to its antioxidant, antiproliferative, and antibacterial activities. The hydroethanolic extracts of red rice show significant antioxidant activity (EC50 of 0.51 mg/mL) and antitumor effects against various cancer cell lines, including lung and liver carcinomas. Although its antibacterial efficacy is limited compared to other extracts, red rice's bioactive compounds suggest potential health benefits and pharmaceutical applications.
