TLDR Glycosaminoglycan levels peak early in hair growth and decrease as the cycle progresses.
The study measured the dermal glycosaminoglycan (GAG) content in rats after hair plucking, which reinitiated their hair cycle. It was found that GAG levels peaked on the 6th day of the anagen stage and decreased during the catagen stage, remaining similar in the telogen stage. A similar pattern was observed for mast cell numbers around hair follicles. Hyaluronic acid, identified through Dowex-1 column chromatography, showed concentration changes that paralleled total dermal GAG throughout the hair growth cycle.
