TLDR Most adults with alopecia have some quality of life impairment, mainly minimal to moderate, and are treated with minoxidil.
This study assessed the quality of life (QoL) in 65 adults with alopecia using the Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI) at a tertiary care teaching hospital in Navi Mumbai, India. The majority of participants were aged 21–40 years, female, and urban residents. Androgenetic alopecia was the most common subtype (69.2%), followed by telogen effluvium (16.9%). The DLQI results showed that 12.3% of patients experienced no effect, 36.9% had a minimal effect, 41.5% had a moderate effect, and 9.2% had a very large effect on their QoL. Minoxidil was prescribed to 72.3% of patients, with topical formulations being the most common. The study concluded that most adults with alopecia experienced measurable QoL impairment, primarily within minimal-to-moderate ranges, with minoxidil as the main treatment.
