    Vitamin D and its metabolites played a crucial role in the endocrine system for maintaining calcium homeostasis in the body. The hormone 1,25 dihydroxyvitamin D (1,25(OH)2 D) regulated serum calcium levels through coordinated actions in the intestine, kidney, bone, and parathyroid gland. Its production was influenced by dietary calcium intake and physiological states such as growth, aging, and menopause. The molecular actions of 1,25(OH)2 D were primarily mediated by the vitamin D receptor, with a significant role in increasing intestinal calcium absorption for bone mineralization, alongside specific actions on the kidney and bone.
