TLDR PUFA-rich oil improves pet hair quality but may raise triglyceride levels.
This study investigated the effects of PUFA-rich oil supplementation on the hair condition and overall health of 10 cats and 12 dogs over a 168-day period. The supplementation, which included a mix of Hoki oil, flax seed oil, lecithin, mussel oil, and sunflower seed oil, improved hair flexibility, brightness, and skin condition in both species, with hair breaking force increasing by 5.79% in cats and 8.68% in dogs. Despite these benefits, the supplementation led to increased triglyceride levels by 13.16% in cats and 33.33% in dogs, although it did not cause weight gain or changes in fecal scoring. The study concludes that while PUFA supplementation enhances hair quality, careful consideration of dosage and fatty acid composition is necessary due to the potential elevation of serum triglyceride levels.
