TLDR Topical 17 alpha-propylmesterolone increases hair cell growth in androgenetic alopecia.
In a study conducted in 1990, 10 male participants with androgenetic alopecia (Hamilton stage IV) were treated topically with a 3% alcoholic solution of 17 alpha-propylmesterolone (PM) for 3 months. Deep biopsies from the fronto-temporal scalp region were analyzed using DNA-flow cytometry to assess cell cycle kinetics. The study found no significant changes in the cell cycle kinetics of connective tissue and fat. However, there was a significant increase in the percentage of S-phase cells and the proliferation index in anagen hair bulbs, suggesting that PM enhanced the proliferative activity of hair matrix cells when applied topically.
