TLDR High prolactin and low vitamin D levels may be linked to hair loss in women.
The research paper "The impact of prolactin and vitamin D levels as a prognostic markers of female hair loss" studied the relationship between prolactin and vitamin D levels in 75 women experiencing hair loss. Prolactin, a hormone secreted by the anterior pituitary gland, can stimulate growth and influence human keratinocytes. The study found that serum prolactin levels were significantly higher in pregnant women with hair loss compared to healthy controls. Additionally, there was a strong positive correlation between vitamin D and serum prolactin levels (r = 0.661, P 0.005), suggesting that both prolactin and vitamin D may play a role in hair loss in women.
