TLDR 19.7% of Afro-Caribbean women in Tobago have PCOS.
A retrospective chart review of 884 Afro-Caribbean women in Tobago revealed a 19.7% prevalence of PCOS, higher than North American studies. The study found 15.7% had irregular menses, 9.2% had infertility, 4.0% had hirsutism, and 0.4% had acne. No significant differences in BMI, age, or parity were observed between groups. Age-specific differences in infertility and irregular menses were noted. The study suggests further research into biochemical profiles and gene-environment interactions to better understand PCOS in this population.

Scalp biopsies are crucial for diagnosing hair loss conditions like Diffuse Unpatterned Alopecia (DUPA) and retrograde hair loss, as treatments like finasteride and dutasteride may not be effective if other conditions are present. Combining PPAR-GAMMA agonists with retinoids could improve treatments for conditions like Lichen Planopilaris.
