TLDR Baldness is common in Korean men (60.5%), and those with a family history are 3.1 times more likely to have hairline recession.
The study investigated the prevalence of fronto-vertex baldness in Korean men from the general population and examined the relationship between family history of baldness and fronto-vertex baldness using the basic and specific (BASP) classification. The prevalence of fronto-vertex baldness was found to be 60.5%, with 82.1% of men with fronto-vertex baldness showing baldness with hairline recession and 17.9% showing baldness without hairline recession. The prevalence of frontal baldness was 34.3%, and that of vertex baldness was 45.5%. Patients with family history of androgenetic alopecia had a 3.1-fold risk of showing baldness with hairline recession than baldness without hairline recession. The study suggests that physicians should more carefully examine the hair on the frontal and vertex hair when diagnosing androgenetic alopecia in men.
