Prevalence of Androgenic Alopecia in Women Aged 20-70 in Isfahan During 2008-2009

    TLDR Almost 40% of women aged 20-70 in Isfahan had hair loss, with it being more severe in those with low ferritin levels.
    In a study conducted in Isfahan from 2008-2009, 1800 women aged 20-70 were examined for androgenetic alopecia, a common form of hair loss. The study found that 39.6% of the women had androgenetic alopecia, with an average age of 50.4 years. In contrast, the average age of women without hair loss was 31.9 years. Additionally, 36% of the women with androgenetic alopecia had ferritin levels less than 40 µg/L, which was not significantly different from normal levels in the society. However, the severity of androgenetic alopecia was greater in people with ferritin levels under 40 µg/L. The prevalence of androgenetic alopecia in this study was higher than in previous studies conducted in other countries, possibly due to inherited or racial factors. The study concluded that serum ferritin levels should be checked and treated in women with androgenetic alopecia.
