TLDR Children with alopecia areata often have low vitamin D, especially if they have darker skin, it's not summer, or they're not White.
The study "Predictors of Vitamin D Insufficiency in Children and Adolescents With Alopecia Areata" reviewed the medical records of 439 pediatric patients diagnosed with alopecia areata (AA) between January 2015 and December 2017, and included 96 children in the analysis. The study found that 60.4% of these patients had insufficient vitamin D levels, with 38.2% being deficient. The study identified that higher Fitzpatrick skin type, non-summer season, and non-White race were associated with vitamin D insufficiency, while the monthly UV index was inversely associated. The study concluded that larger studies are needed to replicate these findings and fully evaluate predictors of pediatric vitamin D deficiency in the US.
