TLDR PRDX5 enzyme may contribute to alopecia areata by affecting oxidative stress and autoimmunity.
The study identified peroxiredoxin 5 (PRDX5) as a candidate susceptibility gene for alopecia areata (AA) through genome-wide association studies and exome sequencing of 897 individuals. PRDX5, an antioxidant enzyme, was found to be upregulated in AA-affected hair follicles, suggesting its role in regulating oxidative stress. A significant variant, rs574087, was identified as a likely causal variant in keratinocytes and melanocytes. The research proposed that dysregulation of PRDX5 could lead to autoimmunity, establishing a connection between PRDX5 and AA pathogenesis, and providing a basis for further investigation into its role in the disease.
